The Trapp Family Lodge made its mark as a place for travelers to stay while dining on fine cuisine in an upscale Austrian-flavored restaurant. Founded by the singing von Trapp family of “The Sound of Music” fame, the lodge expanded over the years to offer outdoors activities on its 2,500 acres including mountain biking, cross-country skiing and disc golf on a course that will soon expand from nine to 18 holes.
Through all those changes, Johannes von Trapp, president of Trapp Family Lodge, Inc., and the son of Maria and Georg “Baron” von Trapp, had another long-held idea: He imagined a brewery making lager in the Austrian tradition of his family’s homeland. That brewery began in the basement of the lodge’s bakery in 2010, but von Trapp had bigger dreams that called for a brewery with a convivial beer hall that provided the perfect tasting room for those Austrian-styled lagers.
“The plan was for the whole complex, the actual brewery and the beer hall,” von Trapp said. He spoke last Friday inside the realization of his dream, the Trapp Family Lodge Bierhall, the restaurant/brewery that opened three weeks ago down the hill from the main lodge complex.
“This,” said the Bierhall’s general manager, Jack Pickett, a veteran of the Stowe restaurant scene, “is a visionary project.”
