After much anticipation, on September 20, the University of Miami held a Grand Opening Dedication Ceremony to mark the completion of R+D Building One, the first phase of the University of Miami Life Science and Technology Park.
Located within the Miami Health District adjacent to the Miller School of Medicine, Building One is quickly gaining recognition as one of the most extraordinary facilities in South Florida.
As we reported a while back, BirchLEAF Miami 31, LLC Regional Center made a $20 million EB-5 loan to developer Wexford Miami, LLC for Building One. Funds from banks, federal new market tax credits, and cash equity also helped fund construction of the impressive new facility.
According to BirchLEAF, the building, comprised of 252,000 square feet of offices, laboratories and support facilities, has already won the LEED gold pre-certification award for its energy saving design. The research to be done inside the facility is expected to put South Florida on the map for producing lifesaving breakthroughs.
Speakers at the ceremony included such notable figures as the President of the University of Miami, Donna E.Shalala, the Mayor of Miami, Tomas P. Regalado, and the chairman of Wexford Science & Technology, LLC, James R. Berens. A guided tour of Building One followed the dedication program.
?This is more than a building, more than a first building, this is a place where education, research and technology intersect with discovery and innovation,? said president of the University of Miami, Donna E. Shalala.
